Burned Forest

Wildfires are an unfortunate part of the American West - back in 2002 the Hayman Fire burned over 138,000 acres and 133 homes just 35 miles from Colorado Springs. The smoke blanketed the city. We make sure we keep an area around our house that's free of trees and dead grass, in case a wildfire goes through our neighborhood. The following photos are from Yellowstone this summer, showing the results of a recent wildfire there.

  2. I find burnt forest very intriguing. Maybe it's the sharp contrast to death and life, tall snags silhouetting against the sky. You've captured some great patterns here.

  4. Wildfires are sad indeed but also the way nature regenerates forests. So there's a little good along with the BIG bad.

  5. An evocative photo. Boom & I find traces of fire up here all the time and it's scary. Boom & Gary of The Vermilon River, Canada.

  7. As there are nearly evey year fires throughout Greece, surely a picture I can relate to. Yet there seems to be an everstronger nature beneath such burned ground !

  8. I never considered getting out and among the burned trees -- your close-ups make quite interesting photos! Nice perspectives on them, too. I do remember the Hayman fire; it produced some fantastic sunsets. And then we felt guilty for enjoying them so much because of all the destruction.

  13. These fires are frightening and must be guarded against. However, you did capture some interesting images. In the first picture it seems as if a couple of trees did survive!

  16. Even we hear about the forest fires over there in Japan. Are there fires every year? It must be very scary to have forest fires so close to your home.

But I have to say your first photo is very picturesque :-)

  18. I remember this fire. I was living in Colorado at the time. Just so happens that I lived in Pine Brook Hills where last summer's fires were.
