Dust Devil

Here's a dust devil seen the weekend before last near the Great Sand Dunes.
It's one of the last photos ever to be taken by my trusty Nikon D40X, as the shutter is no longer working correctly; I'll start looking into a replacement and figure out how to pay for it. And it's my entry for Skywatch Friday.

  1. Love that image! We really liked the Great Sand Dunes when we visited. My husband just saw yesterday that they are tripling the entry fee. More reason to go with the NPS annual pass I suppose.

  2. Oh, what a great capture, Al!! I haven't seen one of those in a long time!! So sorry to hear about your camera problem, but I know you will enjoy having a new "toy" to play with!! I know I did when I had to replace my old one!! Hope your week is going well!! Give the doggies a pat for me!

  3. Could that be dust in your shutter? Shutters can be cleaned and repaired, but by all means get yourself a new camera. Great photo.

  4. It's splitting the mountain in half -- powerful dust devil ! A great picture and I don't envy you having to get a new camera... good luck. (Seems to me like you couldn't take a bad picture no matter what ... but I know you want the best you can.)

  8. Awesome sky shot ~ have them been called 'ghost riders' too?

  9. Dust devils! I remember from my youth that corn husks and leaves would be caught in these as they moved across the fields.

  11. I would be seriously spooked if I saw that coming towards me! I don't think we have dust devils in Scotland - too wet!

  13. Awesome photo Al. We drove through one a few months back and it was a weird feeling! :-) Glad the monsoons have indeed been successful this year.

  14. Great shot of the dust devil. We used to see them often when we were living in Reno. Some of them can be fairly powerful...one tipped a neighbours small garden shed over. Good luck with your camera...
