The main purpose of our little road trip was to visit Colorado's Great Sand Dunes National Park, less than 3 hours from where we live.
It's an impressive stretch of sand dunes as high as 750 feet (230 meters). The tiny dots near the top in the next photo are people.
They seem to stretch forever and are near high mountain peaks.
I love the light and shadow from the intermittent clouds as we climbed up the dunes.
You are allowed to hike into the dunes but it's very tiring.
It is usually windy in this park - this shot shows the sand blowing off the top of a dune.
Awesome sight.
ReplyDeleteThese are beautiful images, Al. They bring back memories of the years we spent in Namibia in the 90's and more recently in the Nubian Desert, North Africa. Enjoy your day/ Jo
ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing place and the sand dunes are awesome!! I grew up in a small town in Texas where there are similar sand dunes/hills and I was always amazed to find small water ponds in the middle of all that sand!! Superb captures for the day, as always, Al!! Have a great new week!!
ReplyDeleteThis vast sandscape could be the Sahara Desert. The hills and dales are beautiful to see but feet sinking into the sand would certainly make walking there a challenge.
ReplyDeleteImpressive sand dunes and lovely photos!
ReplyDeleteAl ~ what a beautiful place and fantastic photography!
ReplyDeleteHappy Week to you,

ReplyDeleteI have a real thing for dunes and desert - it's like my brain can't quite comprehend it (despite watching hours of Dakar each year!!) Wonderful shots
ReplyDeleteWow - those sand dunes are huge! I had no idea there was an area with so much sand right in the middle of Colorado!
ReplyDeleteWow! Stunning, fantastic pictures and place, Al!

You are lucky that this amazing place is less than 3 hours from where you live.
Bravo!
I didn't know these dunes existed. I thought the Indiana Dunes State Park was unique--but I was wrong!
