Independence Mine Area

Surrounding the actual Independence Mine near Victor, Colorado are various structures in poor condition - this probably funneled water.
Here's another nearby mine, I don't remember which one.
And of course there are huge piles of tailings everywhere, frequently polluted with heavy metals.

  2. Your photos look like the bones of a prehistoric burrowing animal. I have often wondered how much gold and other metals could be extracted from those mine tailing with contemporary extraction techniques? Perhaps it is all just a matter of economics.

  3. I love finding old mine ruins! There used to be quite a few in the Black Hills of SD.

  4. It is a shame that these old mine sites have not been cited for clean up. They aappear hazardous.

  8. Makes some fascinating pictures and thoughts of history and the hard work people did. But I'm totally amazed at these ruins being 'out in the open' like this in Colorado. We saw similar sites in Alaska and joked a little about how safety inspectors had forgotten that Alaska was a State. And now I learn that it isn't just 'up north'.
