Autumn in Colorado

I've been away from my blog for a while due to assorted reasons (family and generally being busy), but here's a quick Skywatch Friday post from a hike last weekend to Lilypad Lake in Summit County. First is one of my look-up-with-the-fisheye shots.
The aspen were at their colorful peak.
Here's Lilypad Lake - the reward for hiking up to 9,900 feet (3 km) elevation.
Comments are welcome but I don't promise to respond promptly at this time. Hopefully I can become a regular blogger again at some point.

Mount Rainier From Plane

Here's a Skywatch Friday shot of Mount Rainier, on the way back from South Korea last year.

Deoksugung Palace (2)

Here are some more shots of the wonderful Deoksugung Palace in Seoul, South Korea. I don't remember the details of each building.
Here are a couple of photos looking in - clearly it's a ceremonial building of some kind.
Everything is decorated and well-kept.
Looking more closely brings out more detail.
And even more.

Deoksugung Palace (1)

After Japan, we spent a few days in Seoul, South Korea, visiting friends, family, and of course various sights around the city.
According to Wikipedia, Deoksugung Palace (덕수궁) is one of the "Five Grand Palaces" built by the kings of the Joseon Dynasty.
It became a royal residence in 1592, after other palaces were destroyed.
Restoration work is ongoing, and it's a must-see sight.
The grounds are beautiful and peaceful, in the middle of this huge city.
I'll show more of this grand palace next week.

Mount St. Helens, 1986 (1)

When we were there back in 1986 the mountain was fogged in, so all we could see was the destruction from the famous 1980 eruption.

Tokyo At Night (2)

This is the last of my photos from last year's trip to Japan, a dizzying night-time perspective taken with my ultra-wide fisheye lens.

Hakone Komagatake Ropeway

The Hakone Komagatake Ropeway (箱根駒ヶ岳ロープウェー) climbs from Lake Ashi to  Mount Komagatake.
It opened in 1963, and the top station looks like it. But it's in Japan so I'm sure it's safe.
The views from the top are wonderful.
Despite the growing clouds, Lake Ashi is clear.
There's a small temple near the top.
This is definitely worth doing if you're in that part of Japan.

Snuggling Dogs

Sometimes Socks and Laika like each other - this was one of those times.

Boston

Here's a Skywatch Friday photo from a recent visit to downtown Boston.
And here's a bonus photo of the 15 inches (38 cm) of snow we got at our house here in Colorado last week.

Lake Ashi

After visiting Mount Fuji, our tour took us to Lake Ashi.
The setting was gorgeous and there were some interesting ships on the lake.
We took a cruise, but on a smaller boat.
The beauty was uniquely Japanese.
Next week I'll show you the final sights from this tour, when we went up a mountain.

New York Sunrise (2)

Here's another Skywatch Friday shot of that spectacular sunrise over New York City, taken when we flew through Newark.

Sandwich, Massachusetts

The town of Sandwich, Massachusetts is famous for its boardwalk.
Settled in 1637, it's the oldest town on Cape Cod.
The boardwalk goes over this inlet, and the area has a unique beauty.
This lovely beach is at the end of the boardwalk.
We didn't spend long here because there was rain on the way.
But I'm glad we made the small detour to see it.
We certainly don't have terrain like this here in Colorado!
