Freezing Skies

To remember the arctic weather around my country this week, here are some cold Skywatch Friday photos.

It wasn't as cold here as in most of America, and we're already above freezing, so I can't complain. The second photo tells me I need to clean my sensor.

But the freezing fog can make for some lovely photos.

Icy Weekend

We had some cold weather the last few days, and this is what we woke up to yesterday morning.

It's not uncommon to get some cold nights this time of year, but these grey skies are unusual for us.

But we were back to normal again today, so I took the dog and the camera to the local park.

And that's my post for Our World Tuesday.

Ice, Ice

I went out yesterday morning to take some photos in the yard for Our World Tuesday, and also for Tina's PicStory theme of shadows. We've been cold the last week, and an overnight freezing fog had just lifted. This fog left pretty ice petals on everything, and that's what you see here. This is not snow!

These photos had no definition straight out of the camera, so I had to play with various settings and curves in GIMP to get them to show the delicacy of the ice formations. That's rare for me, usually I post my photos without editing them.

Today's Cold Sunrise

I thought I'd be posting some archived images today, but this morning we had a pretty dawn after the clouds and fog from the last couple of days lifted. So I went out in the cold before breakfast and took a couple of photos.

I'm certain there will be more early morning photos on Skywatch Friday.

Thursday Morning Grey

As I've shown before, we sometimes get fogs settle in on our ridge. Last Thursday morning I woke up to find a fog thick enough that the house across the street wasn't even visible.

The previous photo is also interesting technically, because it's one of the few scenarios when the light fall-off that a wide angle lens has towards the corners is visible. This was taken using an ultra-wide-angle lens at 10mm on f/7.1, and the corners are visibly darker than the center. Normally there's enough variation in a photo that this effect won't be noticed, but with this total gray it can clearly be seen (sometimes it's also visible with a completely clear blue sky). But I don't think it hurts the shot.

When it's cold, these fogs freeze on everything, as this one did.

Both these photos are color, not B&W, but there was simply no color to be seen. I know I've posted photos like this before, but it is time for Skywatch Friday after all!

Cold & Warm, Partly Cloudy Skies

For this week's Skywatch Friday post, I'm uploading photos from two different mornings in the last week. The first two are from early on a frosty morning, after a 24-hour freezing fog finally lifted. This is frost, not snow, in both these photos!

The last shot is from this morning, when I went to Palmer Park to hike with little Socks. It was fairly warm, with skies that were partly sunny, making for flat, colorless light. I've got more photos to post from this hike.

We've got some really cold weather on the way - on Friday our high temperature may be 1° F(-17° C) - but luckily these cold spells are usually very short. Enjoy lots more skyward photographs at the Skywatch Friday meme.

My Icy World

The weather here is extremely changeable, it can be absolutely frigid one day and gorgeous the next, and this weekend was a great example of that. Friday night we had a freezing fog all night, so I took these photos of the results once the sun came up Saturday morning.

By Sunday afternoon it was warm enough to take the dog for a walk in nothing more than jeans and a light sweatshirt. That's the nice thing about Colorado winters, despite the intermittent snow and cold, it's usually sunny and sometimes pleasantly warm. Because of our altitude, the sun has real warmth even in the depths of winter.

Icy Blue

Thanks for all the comments on the post of my first-ever photo, they were fun to read. And happy Thanksgiving to my American readers, and to anyone else who celebrates the holiday. I'm very thankful for my wonderful family and friends, my health, and my job, and too many other things to mention here. Anyway, here's a typical local scene for this time of year (taken in my yard, as are many of my Skywatch Friday shots), ice on the trees but beautiful blue skies overhead.

My Cold World

My world has finally turned wintery - it was 13 degrees Fahrenheit this morning (that's -10.5 Celsius). These photos were taken in my yard last Friday morning, when the snow and freezing fog had lifted and left some very pretty scenes.

Skywatch Friday - Grey Skies and Ice

Although the rest of the week has been sunny, we had a freezing fog Sunday night that left ice on everything Monday morning. So this week's skies form the backdrop to the ice photos. taken before I went to work on Monday morning. Stay warm!

Skywatch Friday - Icy Dawn

We're having one of our really cold spells, so I thought I'd put up a cold picture (it was -2 degrees F when I left for work this morning, or -19 C for most of the world). This was taken in the front yard a couple of weeks ago, just before dawn, after some snow and freezing fog had lifted.

Our winters are actually not bad here. We get an occasional cold snap, and some snow (actually about 100 inches or 250 centimeters of snow at our house in a typical winter). But we also get lots of sunshine, and that sun is warm even in the depth of winter because of our altitude (7,500 feet, or over 2km above sea level).

We had some freezing fog and drizzle over the last couple of days but the sun came out again this morning. I love winter - it may be cold but it's the most beautiful season of the year.
