Independence Mine

Happy Halloween - here are some spooky photos of an abandoned mine to continue showing you some of the history of my part of the world. This is the famous Independence Mine near Cripple Creek. You have to be very careful walking around these old mines and stay on the marked paths because there are unmarked shafts and holes which can kill.
Approximately 200,000 ounces (5,670 kg) of gold was mined here.
It's also infamous for a 1904 cage mishap which killed 15 workers.

  1. Great shots of this old mine head. The Cripple Creek area has long been a major gold mining area. Good to know that some of these old structures still exist.

  8. Wow! I guess I have visited the "safe" version of mines. I will make sure I stand on those marked paths. I have observed the shaft of some mines and they are no joke. #OurWorldTuesday

  9. I think all mine sites are a little eerie and with this one's history even more so. (we've not visited Independence, but similar sites in Alaska and in Bisbee AZ) ... my grandfather was a mining engineer and I remembered listening to his stories of dangers and tragedies.
