Orient Point, New York

Here's a Skywatch Friday photo taken as we waited for the ferry to take us to Connecticut on a cold winter day. Orient Point is on the very end of Long Island, New York.

Northport, Long Island

I took time to visit relatives on Long Island last time I was in New York, and here are some shots of the beautiful Northport harbor.

Long Island by Plane

Last week's photo from the air was taken as I was on a jet flying just north of Long Island, near New York City. It's 118 miles (190 km) long, and at its eastern end splits into two very distinct forks. I was very pleased to see and photograph this from the airplane, and was thinking about making it a Skywatch Friday post as I took the photo.

Northport & Dogs

Northport is another pretty town on the North Shore of Long Island, near New York City; we spent a couple of hours there last time I was in the area.
This is where I photographed the gull.
I love being near the water - ironic since I live so far from it!
And to round out this post, here's a photo from Saturday after a little hike (the weather has been summer-like this weekend) - when we got back in the car I took a quick shot of my happy little hiking buddies.

Mill Pond

Taken at the same location as the harbor photo looking towards Connecticut, this is the Centerport Mill Pond, on Long Island, in the distant suburbs of New York City. It's a very pretty area to take a stroll. In that post I was asked whether the photo was taken in summer, but this trip was actually in mid November.

Two States

From a 2013 trip, here's a view from Long Island (New York state) over to Connecticut on a clear day. Those buildings are probably Stamford, almost 13 miles away.

Mill Pond Heron

I have my repaired laptop back so I'm ready to do some blogging - it has a new motherboard (luckily under warranty). From our recent trip to New York, here's a statue of a heron in Centerport.
Please visit the awesome Skywatch Friday page for more skyward photos.

Centerport Mill Pond

This is the last of my posts from the New York trip. In Centerport, about an hour from New York City, there is a dam which creates a tidal pool called the Mill Pond, which is shown below.
Looking in the other direction from the dam, you see the end of a bay which lets out on the Long Island Sound.
On a clear day, the buildings in Connecticut are visible in the far distance. This picture is taken from the same location, but zoomed in instead of wide angle (in fact these this picture and the previous picture represent the extreme range of the photos I can take, wide-angle to telephoto).
These large gates swing open to let water into the pond when the tide is high, and as the tide goes down they swing closed as shown below. This keeps the water in the Mill Pond circulating and fresh but never lets the level get too low.

Northport & Cold Spring Harbor

It was cold in New York, as these pictures show, all from Long Island. The first two are of the harbor in Northport.
The next two are in Cold Spring Harbor, home of the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, famous for its discoveries in DNA.

Centerport, New York

I spent a few days visiting my father and his wife in New York. I didn't get into the city, but did manage to get a couple of worthwhile shots.

This is from the Vanderbilt Museum in Centerport. This is worth seeing - the grounds are beautiful and there's an extensive collection of stuff from around the world.
These are around the Mill Pond, a tidal pool in Centerport. I took them at night to give a slightly different perspective.
