Nighttime Wildfire Photos

Rumors are that 100 homes may have been destroyed yesterday. Here are a couple of photos I took yesterday evening, both with a telephoto lens. The first one shows the fire beyond the ridge. The photo is straight out of the camera, no editing or special effects.
Here's a photo of a neighborhood from another vantage point. You can see several fires burning. This one is cropped.
Today's supposed to be another hot, windy day.

  1. Monsoon, where are you? Such terrible destruction! I could see the smoke from the Last Chance fire on the way home from Greeley on Monday. Our prairie is just as dry as our mountains. Take care.♥♫

  2. The photos are fantastic, Al, but the view is terrifying! The news has not been encouraging! For a change I'm hoping for rain and wish I could send you some of our weather! It isn't raining today for a change, but it is only 47 degrees right now. I continue to hold good thoughts for you and your family and Socks! Take care, stay safe!

  4. Al, stay safe! Those fires look mighty close. I know many homes/businesses are impacted. Here in Breckenridge we are still fine, not even smelling smoke and seeing falling ash as we were Sat evening from the Leadville fire. But all around us, extreme dryness. I'll be thinking of you.

  5. I heard about them on the news, I hope that your home is safe and that no one you know was hurt. I should imagine that the hot dry weather hasn't helped in your area and of course thunderstorms don't help either as they can cause more fires to break out with lightning strikes. Thanks for sharing:)

  9. I've been worried about you. It was smoky at the kids (Longmont) when we were there, but kept hearing about your area...be safe! (I'm catching up...have missed a week or more)

  13. What powerful photos. I can't imagine the horror seeing this, even from a distance, must inspire.

Every time "Colorado Springs" is mentioned on the news I jump up and run into the other room to see what is being reported. So far it's not good ... I hear thunderstorms are on the way.

My thoughts and prayers are still with you and this beautiful area, Al. Take care.

P.S. Have you heard whether your office is okay yet?

  17. Incredible shots of a sad and frightening event.
Hoping those fires can be brought under control or settle down before causing much more damage. Especially hoping no one was hurt...

  18. These are spectacular shots, Al, but my heart breaks for the people in the area whose homes have been destroyed. I hope and pray that the fires will be put out soon. Unbelievable--the fury of the fire.

  20. Great shots of a scary event. The ones just north of me in Timmins, Ontario, were brought under control with much devastation to the forest. Boom & Gary of the Vermilon River, Canada.

  23. Thank you for these wonderful photos of a terrifying situation. Like the others, I really hope you and your family are safe. I heard on the CBC news this morning that over 300 homes had been destroyed. I do hope that was no accurate, and that rain will fall soon.

  26. Very dramatic skies. As much as I love the colors I wish there were no fires to turn the sky such a beautiful color. My heart goes out to all who live near the wild fires. Stay safe.
