Pit Mine

In my mining explanations, I signed up for a tour of the active Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mine, an active open-pit mine.
It's a major employer in the area and it's impressive to see.
The haulers going up and down the mining roads are massive; I'll show you more details soon.

  1. This post brings a lump to my throat, Al. My husband was in mining for 30 years ending his final contract 18 months ago. The benches in this open pit are perfect. And the haul roads are immaculate. *sigh* how I miss this life!

  2. Stunning open pit mines. The man with his machines will eat the ground cone if it were as soft as a loaf of bread.
    The photos are extraordinary.

  3. When I was in college, I had summer jobs working at coal mines near Gillette, Wyoming. The sheer scale of the machinery was amazing!

  4. You don't get an idea of the size until you see those vehicles in your last photo. What a place. Look forward to seeing some more photos.

  6. Wow - that is huge! But I can't help thinking of the negative environmental impact...

  7. It is gargantuan..., excited to see and learn more. Your photos really do show how massive this operation is and that's hard to show.

  8. Interesting post. I've never really given any thought to mines and how they look like.

  10. I am not used to places like this, so a tour around would have been high up on my list as a tourist :)
    Great images!
