Last weekend while we were in Keystone, nearby Breckenridge was having its snow sculpture competition. We made it there on Saturday evening and I took a few photos with my fast lens - these are all handheld shots. The textures and details in these short-lived artworks were very impressive. First up is a closeup of a section of Team Mexico's first-place winning sculpture, "Alebrije."
Here's a dungeon-like detail from a different sculpture that was lit from within.
Another sculpture was elegantly curved.
And finally, my personal favorite was the Medusa. Especially with the lighting, she was very eerie - don't look her in the eye!

Everything is fantastic! You're right about the eerie Medusa, and whatever an alebrije is, I just love that drool detail made of an icicle!

ReplyDeleteHi - really like the fact that you do very little "off camera" messing about.
ReplyDeleteI really dont like it when your forst reaction to a picture is "I wonder how he (she) did that in photoshop" - yours are splendid!

ReplyDeleteSeveral years ago I was in Brekenridge during the snow sculpture competition. Your picture are wonderful, but I know what being there in person, you are in awe at the sculptures.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing!
I love them, I like the fact they put fiber-optic lights in them. Thanks for sharing:)
ReplyDeleteThe lighting really adds a new dimension to ice sculptures. I have to admit, I like Alebrije's drool! :)
ReplyDeleteIncredible. Can they always be sure of getting the right conditions for the competition, or does the date move around each year to catch the moment when the snow's just right?
ReplyDeleteLove the snow sculptures--would love to be in Colorado--such an awesome place. Mickie
ReplyDeleteTeam Alebrije is the winner for me though all of the participants created them very well.
